This 3rd week of Advent, we will light the Candle of Joy. It is often known as the Shepherd Candle, reflecting the joy that comes through Jesus’ arrival and through the salvation he has gifted us.
We may wonder why the church decided to make this candle a different color than the others. The rosy candle has its roots in something known as Gaudete Sunday, which means “rejoice” in Latin.
This third Sunday of Advent we read, pray and reflect on the joy that God’s plan gives us as foretold by the prophets and fulfilled by the life and death of Christ. We meditate on the promise of Christ’s coming glory-filled return.
During this third week of advent, we celebrate the passage Philippians 4:4-5, as its verses ask readers to “rejoice” for “indeed the Lord is near.”
